Have you ever had someone misunderstand something and take it way out of context? I have discovered that when people do this, it bothers me a lot. Instead of actually researching what they are talking about, they just jump on a bandwagon with everyone else, and ride it right off the cliff. This makes me wonder why people don’t research these things instead of just agreeing with everyone else? I’ve got a few ideas on why they might be doing that:
1. People don’t know how to research something. The internet isn’t always right, but because of the vast information available these days, the internet does make finding the truth behind something a lot easier than it used to be. For instance, if you have ever wondered about certain emails you get claiming that a soldier saved a baby in Africa and that baby grew up to save many people are true or not, you can go to http://www.snopes.com and check it out. I actually recommend checking all that stuff before sending it to everyone in your address book…
2. My friends told me, and I trust my friends. Trust is a good thing too, and I also trust my friends, but I don’t jump on every bandwagon they jump on. I like to try and make sure I know the truth behind it before I join them. What kind of friend would I be if I just blindly jumped on with them, when I could have found the truth and warned them away from looking ignorant?
3. Laziness. It’s much easier just to believe what your told instead of researching and learning the truth and even developing an opinion of your own. Too many people just settle for what so and so told them, when so and so only heard it from somewhere else. We turn into lemmings just following each other because that’s where everyone else is going, and soon we’re all gonna be drowning in the ocean at the bottom of a two hundred foot cliff.
So, maybe it should be my mission to educate people on things that are commonly misunderstood. Hopefully this will not only encourage them to think twice about something before copying it from someone else’s status and posting it to their own, just because that person is their friend. So Research, Read, get the FACTS and make your own opinions. Then we will be using the brains God gave us for more than a space filler in our skulls.
