“Life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you’re going to get!” – Forrest Gump
I remember hearing that line the first time I saw Forrest Gump and thinking that it was so true. Now, however, I’ve started to wonder if it really is true, or is it just one way we can misinterpret our life? There are many things in life we can not control, such as the weather, but is it true that our lives are just one big unknown? I would hope not. I believe that to think that way would be to give up hope in having any control over our lives. In reality, God has given us the ability to have a great amount of control over out lives through free will. Now if you don’t believe in free will, then you don’t have to read this, but I believe that even though God knows the future, he doesn’t choose it for us.
Let’s just take a minute and look at our jobs. When you were hired for the job you are in now, was it by random chance? No, of course not. You made the choice to take that job. It may have been the only opportunity you had at that time, but you still chose to take it. I’m not saying you made a bad choice, just that you made a choice, and were not simply handed some random job from a bucket of all the available jobs in your town. If we can choose our jobs, our mates, and even our cars, what’s to keep us from choosing the type of life we want to live?
You don’t have to rely on luck and chance to give you a good life. If you make the decision to live the life God wants for you (which is the best life you can have), then you just need to make it happen. God can open doors and will help you, but you have to be in contact with him. That is why it is so important for us to be reading God’s word, as well as listening (prayer) and filling our lives with the clean and pure things God provides for us. Then we need to set goals to get where we need to be, find out what we need to do to meet those goals, and then do it.
I’ll use one more example, this one will be about myself. I am currently overweight, and I know that God’s plan for my life does does not include me being overweight and tired all the time. So, I will set a goal for myself to lose so much weight by a certain date. Then I decide that in order to lose that amount of weight in that time, I need to eat certain foods and exercise on a certain schedule. If I write all that down, then I have made a very important step, but it does no good for me to sit there and look at scribbles on paper. I won’t get in shape very quickly like that. Now it is time to act, and once I set that goal I have to make a pact with myself to stick with that goal.
If you wish that your life could be better than it is now, guess what? IT CAN! You don’t have to continue to simply “hope” life will one day give you a break. You can make a decision today that you will work to improve your current situation. Decide where you want to be five years from now, and then set goals that will get you there. Just don’t forget to act! If you can do this with God on your side, then what can stop you?
“Christ gives me the strength to face anything.” – Philippians 4:13 (CEV)
“What can we say about all this? If God is on our side, can anyone be against us?” – Romans 8:31 (CEV)
If you are not where God wants you, then you can take comfort in these words, and know that I am there with you. I have decided that I won’t be here forever though. Living my calling is the only way I can be truly at peace in this life, and I am now on my way there. Why not join me?
Oh, and a book I would recommend if you need some more inspiration is “48 Days to the Work You Love” by Dan Miller. I’m reading it now, and I am getting more excited every time I pick it up! (thanks Jonathan!)
