As many of my friends know, I tend to get on a kick for some time, then drop it to do something else, then drop it and so on. That’s how my wife and friend came up with the name Phil’s Next Kick. Well, that being said, even though I may not have done too much with knives as of yet (mostly because of lack of money), I have collected a few, and I have been having a growing interest in actually attempting to make some of my own. Over the past week I have also been doing a lot of researching on what materials to use, and the tools that I would need to make my own knives, and I have discovered that I don’t really have to invest a whole bunch of money just to make a knife. Now to do what I would eventually love to do, it would take a bit of money, but for right now starting small is just fine with me. So, as far as the tools go, I have decided I will need the following:
A Forge (will be home made… something else I can build!)
Tongs (probably just a long pair of pliers)
Vise (or at least some strong clamps)
Bucket of oil
Eventually I may try and get a few power tools to help speed up the filing and sanding of the blade, but for right now I figured this would be a good start, and these tools probably won’t cost me too much.
Now as far as the blade and handle of the knife go, I did some searching and so far the best cheap sources of steel I could find are from old files, certain saw blades, and leaf springs from old cars. I’m sure there are plenty other sources out there, but these are the ones I’ve seen used the most. I also believe I understand the process pretty well so far too, so now the plan is to get the tools, get the steel, and get to making knives! At first I am going to work on building a forge, and it will probably be a very very simple one, but hopefully I will be able to get that done soon.
So, keep checking back for more updates on this, as well as other things, and if anybody wants to help me out with some of this stuff, just let me know!
