To say this is a dream book for me would have to be an understatement. I have been an avid collector for many years now, and coins are just one of the many things I enjoy gathering into endless piles. I have bought other books on coin collecting in order to learn more and even have a book on grading coins, since I was of course going to become a pro. Just as most of my hobbies, though, I grew tired of actually having to spend time learning about stuff, and put it all on the back shelf.
Then, about a year ago, I found a previous version of this book sitting on a shelf at Hastings. The title alone rekindled my interest in coin collecting, and I knew this was a book I had to have. Unfotunately, actually having the money to buy the book was an issue, so it remained on the shelf. Almost every visit we took to Hastings after that, I would somehow find myself over in the hobbies section flipping through this book. Then one day, it was gone.
Fast forward to three weeks ago. The book review program I am part of, Booksneeze.com, had begun to post new books every Wednesday, and imagine my surprise and excitement when I saw this book was posted on their site! It was like a dream come true, and as soon as I could, I requested it. Due to unknown circumstances, it took the book three weeks to arrive, as opposed to the normal one week, but it was more than well worth it.
Coming from an amateur collector’s viewpoint, this book is perfect! It talks about most of the same things any other coin collecting book would talk about, except the authors make it easy to understand. I now actually understand the difference between a true doubled die coin and a coin with strike doubling, and I can even tell you how and why those two errors happen. These guys explain this stuff in a way that makes if very easy to understand.
However, the majority of the book looks more like a guide of some sort, where each page has one or two error coins with clear pictures and descriptions of the error and how to spot it. These pages make it super easy to know exactly what your looking for on your coins. It makes you feel hopeful that there might actually be a coin in your pocket that is actually worth a lot more than face value. I’ve already been searching through all my change like a madman, and as long as this book stays with me, that search may never stop!
– FYI, I got this book from Booksneeze.com in exchange for my review. I was not required to be positive, and did not receive any other compensations. If you enjoy reading, and have a blog of your own, check out Booksneeze.com!
